Privacy policy

LapKeeper is an iPhone lap timer for track days. This page says what it collects, why, and what you can do about it. LapKeeper is run by Shawn Poindexter. Questions go to privacy@lapkeeper.com.

In short

• Your timing sessions stay on your phone unless you share one.
• There are no ads, no tracking across other apps or websites, and no analytics services in the app.
• We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't use it to profile you.
• You can delete your account, and what it holds on our server, in the app's Settings.

What stays on your phone

Timing uses your location, and the phone's motion sensors, while a session runs, including with the screen locked. The sessions it records (your path, speeds, lap times and motion) are saved on your phone. So are tracks you keep private, the data from a RaceBox or other device you connect, and your settings. None of this reaches our server unless you use one of the features below.

What reaches our server

• Finding tracks. To find public tracks near you, the app sends your current location to our server. The server uses it to answer and doesn't keep it.
• Your account. Signing in takes your email address, by an emailed link, or through Google or Apple. Signing in with Google gives us your email address and name. Signing in with Apple gives us an ID for your Apple Account, your email address or, if you choose to hide it, an address Apple forwards to it, and your name the first time. We also keep a token from Apple, encrypted, so that deleting your account can end Sign in with Apple for LapKeeper. Your account also holds the display name, username and photo you choose.
• Your public page. Your username, display name and photo, your cars with their photos and modifications, the social media usernames you add, and the tracks you added are public, in the app and at lapkeeper.com. Stats such as tracks visited, track days and best laps appear there only when you turn them on.
• Your cars' CAN channels. The channels you set up for a car's CAN device (their names, CAN ids, equations and units) are kept with your cars, so your other phones get them. They're never public, and the values your CAN device records stay on your phone.
• Following and blocking. Who you follow, who follows you, and who you block. A driver you block isn't told. Neither of you sees the other's page, sessions or posts, and you stop following each other.
• Sessions you share. A shared session includes its path, speeds, motion, lap times, the track and the car. It's seen by the people you share it with, or by anyone when you share it publicly.
• Public tracks. A track you make public shares its name, its start/finish line, and the state or region it's in, so drivers can search for it. When you time at a public track, the app sends each lap's time, direction, length, layout and date, but not your path. That counts the laps driven there and keeps its start/finish accurate.
• Posts and replies. What you post goes to the people who follow you.
• Sharing your location at a track. Only if you turn it on in Settings. While you're within 3 km of a public track's start/finish, and LapKeeper is open or timing, the app sends your position and the track about every 30 seconds. It stops when you leave the track, close LapKeeper without timing, or turn sharing off. People you follow who follow you back, and who share their own location at the same track at the same time, see where you are there, with your name and how long ago it updated. No one else sees it, and it's never on the web. We keep only your latest position, for five minutes at most, and none of its history.
• Notifications. If you allow notifications, your phone's notification token, so we can tell you about new posts and replies.
• Reports. When you report something to us, the report and any note you add.
• Sign-in requests. To stop sign-in emails being abused, we note which network (IP address) a request came from, for a short time.

Google Drive

If you choose Google Drive under Sessions backup, your sessions are copied from your phone to a folder in your own Google Drive. The app can only see files it created there. The copies don't pass through our server, and the access Google grants stays on your phone.

Who handles it for us

• Cloudflare runs our server, database and file storage, and sends our sign-in emails.
• Google handles signing in with Google, and Drive if you use it.
• Apple distributes the app, delivers notifications, and handles signing in with Apple. Its geocoder also tells the app which state or region each track you save is in, from the track's start/finish.

They handle your information to provide these services to us, under their own privacy terms. We don't share it with anyone else, unless the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep what's on our server until you delete it or your account, except a location you share at a track, which we keep for five minutes at most. Deleting your account in Settings removes your account, profile, cars, photos, shared sessions, follows, blocks, posts, lap reports and any shared location from our server. If you signed in with Apple, we also tell Apple to forget LapKeeper for your Apple Account. Tracks you added stay public, looked after by LapKeeper. Our database keeps backups for up to 30 days, after which deleted information is gone from them too.

Your choices and rights

• Change or remove your profile, cars, photos, public stats, social media usernames and shared sessions in the app.
• Turn location, motion, camera, Bluetooth and notification access on or off in iOS Settings. Timing needs location.
• Turn sharing your location at tracks on or off in the app's Settings, under Sharing. It starts off.
• Block a driver from their page or their posts, and unblock them in Settings, under Sharing.
• Delete your account in Settings, under Account.
• Ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct or delete it, at privacy@lapkeeper.com. Depending on where you live, the law may give you these and other rights, and we'll honor them.

Children

LapKeeper isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, tell us and we'll delete it.

Changes

When this policy changes, we'll update this page and its date. We'll tell you in the app about changes that matter.
